WEBSITES CURRENTLY BOOKMARKED . . .

A Good Source of Vitamin DVD . .
As Reeling Back grows, you will read about many movies that you remember. There will also be titles that are new to you and that you wish you'd seen at the time of their original release. Fortunately, the technology of the 21st century makes it possible to recapture the popular culture of the 20th. Although there are many sources for films on DVD, I have found the Burnaby, B.C.-based C&L Internet Club to be a reliable place to begin a search.

Going to the Comics Source . . .
Recognizing that comics (or, as they're known in the tonier bookstores, graphic novels) have become a major source for screenwriters, Reeling Back has its own section devoted to movies "Based on Comics." Along with such innovative filmmakers as Luc Besson, John Woo and Joss Whedon, I take current comics seriously and am happy to report that the Vancouver area boasts a number of top-notch comic shops. My personal favourite is Aaron Birkenhead's RX Comics where the motto is "We've Got the Prescription for Your Comic Book Addiction!"

Speaking of Joss Whedon . . .
Among contemporary creators of popular culture, no one has attracted more attention in the academic community than Joss Whedon. Scholars take the man and his work seriously and have made "Buffy studies" a recognized discipline. To date, the international Whedon Studies Association has sponsored five Slayage Conferences, the most recent held over four days at the University of British Columbia in July, 2012. Anyone with an inclination to explore the deeper meaning(s) of the Jossverse, should consider a visit the WSA's website.

Parental Guidence Recommended . . .
Just as films come with ratings and the occasional content warning, the work of artist and publisher Robin Bougie is an experience that requires some classification and context. In the tradition of the best underground comix artists of the 1970s, Bougie is a film historian whose Cinema Sewer magazine enthusiastically champions exploitation, cult and adult movies. He's also a jolly pornographer, keeping alive the triple-x sensibility in his annual Sleazy Slice anthology comic. Personally, I like Robin and respect him as a journalist . . . and I recommend his website for grown-ups who share an interest in the areas of pop culture that he covers.

Parental Pride on Shameless Display . . .
The artist at the Espresso Stoat Studio has a very special place in my heart as do the items of jewellery and sculpture she creates using polymer clay and found objects.
